A Variety of Virgin Stories

Aspiring Virgins journey inwards to know themselves and be themselves. Here are 8 variations of the Virgin story with examples. The explanations refer to the Virgin as “she” (because it is shorter than “he or she”, and refers to the feminine in all of us - no one is just one way) but notice that the examples have male and female protagonists.

  1. Coming of Age – This is probably the first type of movie people think of when they think of a Virgin story. Virginity is awakening to the realization that through listening to our bodies, we connect to out inner voice, and awaken to our power to connect to something wonderful and authentic. It is learning through the impulse for joy.

    1. Shakespeare in Love

    2. Her

    3. Moonlight

  2. Coming of Age Sucks – following your impulse for pleasure makes you vulnerable to the environment you live in. Sometimes this goes really badly. Yet, even in this situation there can be the realization that you deserve to feel joy and your intuition is your best guide.

    1. Virgin Suicides

    2. Brokeback Mountain

    3. The Accused

    4. An Education

  3. Dreams Come True –Looking to know yourself often leads to the discovery that you have a dream for what or how you want to be in your life. Often this dream bares no relationship to any tangible proof it could come true. You just have to believe. And then get out there and grow into it.

    1. Working Girl

    2. Bend It Like Beckham

    3. October Sky

    4. World’s Fastest Indian

    5. Jojo Rabbit

  4. Realizing your talent – Everyone is born with a star inside them that longs to be brought to life. This talent is meant to be shared with the world. In the beginning it needs to be nurtured in order to reach its full potential. The Virgin has to see her potential and decide she is worth the effort.

    1. Little Voice

    2. Billy Elliot

    3. The Pursuit of Happiness

(notice dream movies can also be talent movies)

  5. Awakening to your authentic nature/worth and finding a place of belonging is one of the biggest drives in being human. The first step is to connect to yourself even when the environment says you are not good enough. The Virgin is on a journey to know she is worthy of love and belonging just for being herself. She can find an environment that supports this but mostly she has to believe it in her heart.

    1. Lars and the Real Girl

    2. The Way, Way Back

    3. Pretty Woman

    4. Lady Bird

  6. Coming Out of the Closet – a special variation of Coming of Age where being yourself is at odds with the values of the people you are related to. Belonging is threatened as well as self-acceptance.

    3. The Children’s Hour

When she looks inside herself and connect to her authentic voice, “that’s not how we do things” seems pretty irrelevant to her. Virgins are original versions of themselves and often this brings much needed change to the kingdom.
